I first encountered Robert Sapolsky in the same way as I’ve found many nonfiction authors as of late: on Joe Rogan’s podcast (Sapolsky’s appearance is notable for being the only episode of the podcast for which Joe traveled away from his studio). Given all that, buying a 700 page epic on the neurobiology of behaviour was a silly idea, right? I’m just never able to handle the 900 page scope of The Better Angels of Our Nature. But they’re also large and – despite the effort to communicate engagingly and intelligibly – rather dense. To be sure, they’re fascinating – quite literally bursting at the seams with information, thought experiments, consciousness-raisers and more. I have a confession to make: I own four books by Steven Pinker and I’ve never made it all the way through a single one.
